Safe transplantation of baby cactuses

3

Supplies:

  1. A “mother” cactus with it´s “baby” cactuses
  2. A pot
  3. scissors
  4. A long piece of cardboard
  5. Decorative stones (optional)

Procedure:

Step 1: Put the scissors at the top of the baby cactus and push it down hard but gently. The small cactus can easily removed, but it leaves a mark at the main cactus. Don’t worry about it. The main plant will heal that mark in a few days! Repeat the same procedure for all the small cactuses.

Step 2: With the help of the scissors, transfer the baby cactus at the middle of the cardboard.

Step 3: Wrap around the cactus with the cardboard and hold it from the paper edge without touching the cactus.

Step 4: Now you can lift it safely and put it the hole you made at the new pot. Repeat the same procedure for all the small cactuses!

Tip: All those cactuses don’t yet have roots. That’s why it is recommendable to put some decorative rocks between and around the new plants, to keep them steady.1

The diverse species of cactus are some of my favorite types of plants to garden. Once cacti are old enough, the “mother” plant begins to produce smaller pups which can be transplanted and grown separately. Here is a great and simple tutorial on how to safely transplant them. Check it out!
